10 – 16 September
1. Lourdes Leon makes her NYFW runway debut
The daughter of Madonna walked for Gypsy Sport, a brand persistent in their messaging that fashion is one of the world’s biggest polluters; 99% of Gypsy Sport’s spring/summer 2019 collection was made from sustainable or repurposed materials. On the runway, Lourdes wore a shell necklace which doubled as a bra, shredded bell-bottom jeans, and a headpiece made from green feathers.
2. Stella McCartney designs vegan Stan Smiths
“We’ve been collaborating with Adidas for so many years, and this is the next chapter in that collaboration. Creating a vegan leather Stan Smith brings a modern twist to an iconic design,” said Stella McCartney. Other unique details include perforated stars on the side panel creating the Three Stripes branding, McCartney’s logo on the heel, her name debossed on the lateral heel, and her portrait stamped on the left tongue. If you find yourself in the UK before September 23rd, get 10% off your purchase by bringing your pre-owned Stan Smiths to the designer’s 23 Old Bond Street boutique.
3. Marc Jacobs closes NYFW with a massive delay
Unlike many fashion shows, the Marc Jacobs’ has been known to start on time (ever since Anna Wintour reportedly walked out after having to wait for an hour). This time, fashion editors who had to catch their flights to London Fashion Week were seen leaving the show, scheduled to start at 6pm. Lights only dimmed at 7.25pm, but Anna Wintour was still in her seat, taking in the rainbow feathered dresses.
4. Eighteen models will walk their first show for Victoria’s Secret
Booking a Victoria’s Secret show is the holy grail for models — it’s how we’ve come to know Miranda Kerr, Adriana Lima and Heidi Klum. This year’s lineup is great on the diversity front, with Kelsey Merritt being the first Filipina model to ever sport the wings. Winnie Harlow didn’t make the cut last year, but the tide turned this year, a news she shared on Instagram: “And thank you so much to my fans who have been pushing me forward to this point in my career. I’m so blessed thank you Lord!! I’M WALKING THE VICTORIA’S SECRET SHOW!”
5. Selena Gomez makes an “UGLY” statement
Kill them with kindness, right? After sitting front row at Coach’s spring 2019 runway show, Gomez was spotted out in New York wearing a shiny hair accessory. Next to the braid parting her hair down the middle, Gomez bedazzled the word “ugly” on the right side of her head for all the world to see — a clapback at Stefano Gabanna who called Gomez “so ugly” last June.
6. See-now-buy-now still going strong for Coach
The cylindrical bags seen on the Coach spring/summer 2019 runways were inspired by a 1960s design by Bonnie Cashin, the original Coach designer. Stuart Vevers made it fun and modern with another Disney collaboration. Cue hangtags of Dumbo, the Dalmatians, and Thumper from Bambi, all available to buy now
7. Dior to show men’s pre-fall collection in Tokyo
Kim Jones’ debut collection will launch with a runway show in Tokyo on 30 November. The show will coincide with a Dior menswear pop-up at a Japanese department store that will be the first to sell the new collection.
