The long-awaited Captain Marvel trailer is likely coming out soon, and Marvel Studios was right to hold off on releasing it until now. After a highly successful 2018, Marvel’s first outing of 2019 sees Carol Danvers finally take center stage, becoming the first female superhero to headline a solo film in the MCU (Wasp co-lead Ant-Man and the Wasp). There’s much excitement surrounding the project, and fans can’t wait to get a good look at what directors Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck have in store. The EW spread was great for photos and details, but nothing beats footage.
Over the summer, Marvel boss Kevin Feige indicated the first Captain Marvel trailer would debut at some point in the fall. With the recent revelation that star Brie Larson will appear on ABC’s Good Morning America on Tuesday, September 18, all signs are pointing to the trailer coming out then. The delay has been quite frustrating for viewers, but Marvel’s strategy is quite sound.
For starters, Captain Marvel has been in post-production for only a couple of months. In an amusing case of serendipity, it wrapped filming on the same day Ant-Man and the Wasp opened in theaters. Since this is a special effects heavy blockbuster, the creative team probably wants to take as much time as they can to fine-tune the CGI before sharing it with the general public. The last thing anyone wants is for the excitement for the trailer to be dampened by questionable visual effects. While there’s still plenty of work left to do before final picture is locked, there should be enough finished footage to put together a short teaser. Plus, it’s fairly standard for Marvel to unveil the first preview for a new film five or six months out from release, so this isn’t anything out of the ordinary.
It also makes sense to time the trailer release with the premiere of Venom, which opens in a few weeks. Sony’s comic book adaptation is expected to be a big box office hit, possibly breaking the October opening weekend record. Of course, by now Marvel Studios doesn’t need any help to promote their brand, but it’s typical industry practice for upcoming tentpoles to attach trailers to some of the current year’s major films. Venom, which is rated PG-13 so it could possibly crossover with the MCU one day, is the only franchise tentpole coming out between now and November’s Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald. If the Infinity War marketing campaign is anything to go by, Marvel will probably begin revving up the hype machine for Avengers 4 around November, with a title announcement and first trailer. It’s a good idea to give Captain Marvel some time to itself before the epic team-up takes the spotlight for a while.
Marvel hasn’t had a legitimate commercial disappointment since The Incredible Hulk in 2008, so it’s safe to say they have a good handle on advertising. In the first decade of the MCU, they’ve been able to take an assortment of B-level superheroes and obscure comic book titles, and turn them into household names. The results speak for themselves, and fans shouldn’t doubt their methods. It has been a long wait for Captain Marvel, but now that all of Marvel’s 2018 films are out, they can finally turn their attention to what’s next.
