Finland really wants you to visit and has been on a non-stop campaign to attract travelers. Back in 2016, the country’s tourism board launched the “FinRelax” program encouraging visitors to chill out through a five-step, natured-focused process. Then, in 2017, Off the Map Travel launched a new experience called the Aurora Floating Experience where you float on a frozen lake in the country under the Northern Lights. And now they’re hoping to lure you there by offering up dream jobs.
Dozens of companies in Northern Finland announced recently that they’re looking for candidates to take on jobs that involve things like playing with dogs, taking pictures of nature, hanging with Santa Claus, and watching the Aurora Borealis. All of these gigs come with unique “benefits” like getting to spend time in nature, breathing in the cleanest air in the world, and chilling out in a traditional sauna after work. Interested? Here are some of the most enticing jobs available, all of which are posted on EURES, the European Job Mobility Portal, making it easy for anyone in the world to apply.
1. Winter Safari Guide
For the snow lover, this is the ultimate seasonal gig. Safari guides lead Finnish and foreign tourist groups in a variety of winter activities. For example, you might drive a snowmobile, hike on cross-country skis or snowshoes, or go ice-fishing. What’s a typical working day? Mostly it would involve preparing and participating in outdoor activities with visitors.
2. Husky Wrangler
Love dogs and nature? Well, one company is looking for a husky guide to lead sled dog safaris. In the seasonal role, you’ll be in charge of tending and feeding the dogs, driving the sled, and cooking for customers out in nature. Once your work is done, the pups probably wouldn’t mind playing a little fetch in the snow.
3. Photography Tour Leader
Trying to capture images of the Northern Lights is on the bucket list for many people. But one company wants to make it your job. Photography tour operator, Beyond Arctic, is looking for adventurous photographers to lead tours through the most picturesque spots in the beautiful Lapland. An alternate job title could be “Northern Lights Hunter.”
4. Santa’s Helper
This is not your typical shopping mall Santa job. SantaPark Arctic World is looking for “elves” to bring the most authentic-looking North Pole workshop to life. You’ll be tasked with bringing Christmas cheer to visitors from all over the globe in one of the most stunning locations. Inside the whimsical attraction, you can actually cross the Arctic Circle from below ground. And once you step outdoors, you have a chance at seeing a real reindeer or staying in a glass treehouse surrounded by snow.
5. Wilderness Cook
Being a chef that likes the outdoors doesn’t always work out. While most cooking jobs require you to work in the kitchen, Finland has a food gig where you’re required to be outside. One company is seeking a cook to prepare lunch for tourists who booked ice fishing, snowshoeing and reindeer experiences. You’ll be tasked with bringing wood, starting the fire, bringing water, heating it up and making the food in addition to preparing reindeer and sleighs. But you have to really love winter because the job states, “We seek for people who are not afraid of cold (freezing temperatures) and do not mind working outdoors regardless of weather conditions. We need people who do not give up easily.”
